If you have walked the Christian way for any amount of time, you have noticed at times that we lose the joy of our salvation. Many, when they come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, cannot stop thinking about the One they love. They look with enthusiasm at the prospect of spending time in the Word and time in prayer. This should give way to a more settled trust and confidence in God that produces even more joy. Yet, how often discouragement, doubt and defeat creep in, and the believer wonders what has happened. John Wesley wrote a hymn with the words, "Where is the joy I knew when once I saw the Lord?" David even felt this in Psalm 51:12 and requested of the Lord, "Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit." Both Wesley and David focus on where true joy can only be found - God. In times of leanness of sould, when we think we are walking through a spiritual wasteland, we cannot focus on experience, doing things; we need to focus on God. We need to see the breathtaking wonder again that God loves sinners like us through Christ.
