Our physical affluence has solved many of our problems. We no longer have to forage for food, or wonder if we'll have shelter for the night, or worry about whether we will have clothing on our back the next day. But it has led to other problems. The chief of these being that we exchange things that are seen and experienced for the only wise Creator. And it's easy to see why: we look at the things accumulated and say, "oh life is good"; or we can feel the touch of another; or can experience that long awaited vacation. It is easy to exchange the visible for the invisible, the physical for the spiritual. We are all wired to serve and worship someone or something. The question is what or whom will we worship? When Jeremiah talked about idols with the nation of Israel, he reminded them, "It is He who made the earth by His power, who established the world by His wisdom; and by His understanding He has stretched out the heavens (Jer 10:12)."
