As we talk about love and unity for the glory of Christ, we doubt that it is possible. When we view the differing array of people that compose the church, with different backgrounds and different temperaments, how could it ever be possible? Think of Christ's disciples, men who turned the world upside down, they were men of extremes. We have Matthew, who was a despised turncoat who collected Roman taxes from his own countrymen. We have Simon the zealot, who belonged to the ultraconservative Zealot party that wanted to overthrow the Roman government by force. No one hated a tax collector more than a zealot. Christ's purpose for Matthew and Simon was that their relationship display such an amazing unity and love that the surrounding world would take notice, and in so doing glorify Christ. That is why Paul admonishes us to be "diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit" (Ephesians 4:3). Do we have strife against others in the body? Unity requires more than getting along, but loving as Christ loved.
