As we think of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ this season, we've seen in John's prologue to his gospel that the Word is preexistent, Deity, Creator, and Incarnate. But the Word came to do revelatory work. Jesus came to reveal life and light (John 1:4-5), grace and truth (John 1:14), and even God Himself. "No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him." (John 1:18). Jesus never ceased to be God, but laid aside those attributes which would be incongruous with true humanity. For instance, God dwells in unapproachable light (1 Timothy 6:16). The most accurate picture we have of what God is like is Jesus Christ. He "explained Him." Or He authoritatively expounded Him by both His life and His words. For although Jesus was man, in every sense of the word, He was also God in all dimensions of deity. We never have to wonder what God is like because Jesus Christ, the Great Word of John's prologue, has revealed Him in all His wonderful character.
