I can remember when I was in my mid-twenties and my wife seemed to be able to read street signs from an enormous distance away. I was truly impressed. The truth of the matter was, not that she had terrific eye sight, but that I had poor eye sight. Through the years my eyes had deteriorated gradually, and I did not even know it. What a difference when I got my first set of glasses. I marveled at all that I had been missing. There is a spiritual principle in there as well. We, many times, do not realize the dimming of our trust in God. We take on more and more the sins of the world, then gradually, we have become blinded to our spiritual condition. Each of us must be vigilant to guard our hearts and look for sin. Major spiritual lapses keep their distance. It is only after little doses that we become blind. We need the lens of Scripture to allow us to see the sin in our lives. Paul prayed for the Ephesian believers, "that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that we may know what is the hope of His calling." We need the spectacles of Scripture to see life and God rightly. Let's not only be in the Word, but be applying it to our own hearts, that we would not be blinded by sin!
