It is amazing to look at what is truly important to us and where we invest our time. Things of this life quickly become idols to us and we quickly overindulge in the temporal. The seventeenth century puritan, Thomas Watson, had an acute awareness of this tendency when he wrote, "You may over-love the creature. You may love wine too much, and silver too much; but you cannot love God too much. If it were possible to exceed, excess here were a virtue; but it is our sin that we cannot love God enough." We always stress a balance in the Christian life, as we realize even the good things of this life can become misplaced idols. But God should never be misplaced in our lives. The balance we seek is an ever increased awareness of His gracious presence. When we are consumed with that passion of knowing Christ, it leaves little space for the distractions of this life to take center stage. The degree that we should love God is beyond measure. As we constantly learn the great truth of Christ, may our hearts sing, "O LORD, our LORD how majestic is Your name in all the earth!" (Ps. 8:9)
