It's amazing as we go through bible study on Wednesday night, to see how truly blessed we are today with God's Word so readily available. Most people throughout the centuries never had a copy of the bible, or if they did, only a part of it. Someone might own a copy of the Psalter, another the gospel of John. The Lollards, under John Wycliff in the sixteenth century, took the task of translating the bible into English. When Rome pressured the English government to crack down and began burning copies, the Lollards took to memorizing the Word. They would memorize an entire book of the bible, then take on the Biblical author's name. When they met, James would stand and recite James, Mark would recite Mark. Such dedication and love for God's Word certainly puts us to shame. Hebrews 4:12 says, "For the word of God is living and active..." Let us realize our responsibility and let His Word live in our hearts, as we diligently look into His perfect law. |

The mysteries of human suffering will not be solved in this lifetime. Sometimes we suffer because we are human and our bodies grow older. Sometimes we suffer because we are foolish and disobedient to the Lord. Sometimes it's because God is building character in us. But other times God in his goodness, sends suffering to humble us. Paul told of his suffering, "Because of surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me - to keep me from exalting myself!" (2 Corinthians 12:7). Exciting spiritual experiences, like many Paul had, have a way of filling us with pride. We lose perspective and think that we are God's program instead of God being the giver of good gifts. Suffering causes us to take our eyes off of ourselves and put them on God. Paul's thorn in the flesh was given to keep him from sinning. God sends us suffering many times to keep us from sinning. What a good God!! |

As we look at the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, nothing compares to its significance. Other major doctrines, such as the doctrine of the incarnation, or the second coming, or the creation of the new heaven and new earth, all lose their significance without the death of Christ. In His death, He supremely revealed the love and holiness of God. So often we think of the death of Christ, many think that there must have been some other way, but once God decreed to save mankind, there was no other way and no other means. One who was human must live a perfect Godlike life, and give His life as a substitute for others. There was only one option and that was the Second Person of the Trinity taking on human flesh and dying in our place. There was no other way. This was not one option among many. Galatians 2:21 says, "For if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly." If salvation could come in any other way, then Christ's sacrifice was no use. This is the only way. Praise God for His eternal plan and His eternal goodness!! |

Have you ever spoken on a subject that you knew a lot about, but said a false statement by accident that you later had to retract? I think we can all admit that we make mistakes and blunders, even when we perceive that we are certain. Our authority can only go so far. Our words can only carry so much weight. But consider God and the authority of His Word. God has never had to retract a single statement or apologize for a misjudgement. He is perfect, and His Word is perfect. Psalm 19:7 says, "The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the LORD is pure, making wise the simple." We have the perfect Authority in our lives. Many times in strife and difficulties, we'll try our own authority and wisdom. We've been wrong in our judgment so many times and God has always been right, but somehow, we still seem to trust ourselves. Let's remember God's Word and that this is the authority that we need to turn to in times of trouble. |

Our Redeeming God |

Romans 3:23-24 says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus." Redemption is one of the most beloved and cherished terms for the believer. B.B. Warfield, the renowned theologian of the early part of the last century said, "there is not one of the titles of Christ which is more precious to Christian hearts than 'Redeemer.' Because this name is the name specifically of the Christ of the cross. Whenever we pronounce it, the cross is placarded before our eyes and our hearts are filled with loving remembrance not only that Christ has given us salvation, but He paid a mighty price for it." Many times, we are seen too theological, too abstract, too biblical. But we must remember, it is these precious truths and the understanding of them that truly give life and joy to our testimony. Our Redeemer lives and has paid the price for our sin. We are no longer in the slave market of sin. Sin has lost its sway over the heart of the Christian and now we are free to be His loving servants. Praise God, He is our Redeemer! |
